Website, web app, or SaaS — which do you need?

A practical decision guide for founders and operators. No price promises. No claim that every business needs a platform.

Teams often ask for a “website” when they need an application — or a “SaaS” when a focused marketing site would ship value sooner. Use this guide to choose the smallest product that solves the job.

Premium business website

Choose this when the primary job is to present the company, explain the offer, and convert visitors into inquiries. Strengths: brand, clarity, performance, SEO-ready structure, multilingual pages. It can include forms and a CRM handoff. It is not a multi-user operations system.

Premium websites

Custom web application

Choose this when people must log in, manage records, follow a process, or replace fragile spreadsheets. Strengths: authentication, roles, databases, APIs, operator UI. It runs part of the business. It is heavier to scope and maintain than a marketing site.

Web applications

Custom SaaS platform

Choose this when you are building a software product for multiple customers or workspaces — with accounts, permissions, and often billing. Distinguish MVP (prove the core journey) from production hardening (tenancy, ops, monitoring). Do not start here if a website or internal app would answer the first question.

SaaS development

Tradeoffs to keep honest

  • A website can be excellent without becoming an application.
  • An application without clear operators and data ownership becomes another spreadsheet.
  • SaaS without a sharp MVP often ships features before product-market learning.
  • Automation and AI connect products to operations — they are not a substitute for choosing the right product type.
